Korakaha – Iron wood tree – Memecylon umbellatum

English name: Blue mist or Iron wood – Korakaha (කොරකහ)

Kora Kaha is a native shrub valued for its ornamental beauty, especially when in bloom. Its small, purplish-black fruits are edible and typically appear from July to October.

The plant holds significant medicinal value:

  • A decoction of the roots is traditionally used to treat irregular menstruation.

  • An infusion of the leaves serves as an astringent for ophthalmia (eye inflammation).

  • The leaves also yield a yellow dye when boiled.

Though the wood is not widely utilized, it has occasionally been used to make tool handles.

Koarakaha can be propagated from seeds. If you are interested in obtaining Koarakaha seeds, please contact 077 321 0212.
